British Columbians forced from their homes by floods, earthquakes or other emergencies may receive Emergency Support Services (ESS) for up to 72 hours. ESS is the heart of emergency and disaster response. ESS services may include food, lodging, clothing, emotional support, information about the crisis, and family reunification. There may also be special services like first aid, child minding, pet care and transportation. Whether it’s helping displaced families find shelter or assisting with food and clothing, ESS provides the services and support needed by those affected by a disaster.
If you are energetic, motivated and organized and have a few hours to spare each month, then the Sayward Emergency Support Services Team has a very rewarding opportunity for your consideration. This leadership position will provide an opportunity for positive involvement in your community. Emergency Support Services Director (ESSD) will be responsible for recruiting a team of volunteers to organize and staff reception centres and arrange for shelter, clothing, food, and other emergency needs to the public in the event of a community emergency.
The successful applicant will have good leadership skills, be a team player as well as being a warm, caring, and community orientated person who can work under stressful situations.
Responsibilities
- Finding other volunteers;
- Participating in ESS training courses and professional developments;
- Working with local businesses, service organizations, Sayward Emergency Program
- Coordinator and the Strathcona Regional District Protective Services Coordinator;
- Coordinating housing and feeding people forced from their homes;
- Providing services to people who are unable to leave their homes; and
- Supporting other emergency responders.
Qualifications / Training / Experience
Knowledge of Emergency Support Services (completion of all ESS courses preferred)
Knowledge of emergency management concepts, regulations, requirements, and
procedures (completion of Introduction to Emergency Management, Introduction to
EOC, and Incident Command System Level 100 preferred)
- Volunteer experience
- Crisis response and coordination experience
- Event or program management
- Volunteer management experience
