Village of Sayward Council and staff are saddened to hear of the passing of John MacDonald, former long time Mayor of the Village of Sayward.

“It's with a heavy heart we announce the passing of former Mayor John MacDonald.  John MacDonald served Sayward for over a decade with pride, dignity, and love for our community. To John MacDonald’s wife, Councillor Sue Poulsen, and all of John's family and friends, our hearts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time” said Village of Sayward Mayor, Mark Baker.

John MacDonald was first elected to Mayor in 2008 and served 12 years in that position, he was first elected to Council in 2005.  John was proclaimed Mayor by acclamation in 2008 and 2018, and he was the longest serving member of Council since the Village’s incorporation in 1968.  John also served on the Strathcona Regional District Board for 15 years and was Board Chair for 2 years.  In March of 2020 he retired to spend time with family and focus on his health.

The flags at the Sayward RCMP and Fire Hall will be at half mast as a sign of respect to the family.  In addition, a book of condolence is available at the Village municipal office for the public to express their condolences.

A celebration of life is being planned; more information will be available at a later date.
